Healthy Eating
I believe it is very important children learn that a healthy lifestyle is paramount to their growth and development. I have a healthy eating policy, which outlines my rules on food and drinks.
I record what young children have eaten in their daily contact book and will display a daily snack and fruit menu for parents to see. Snack times will be inclusive of a portion of fruit daily. I display in my home lots of images of healthy food and talk to the children about their five a day targets, and how to keep strong and healthy by eating well. I have resources, which deliver a healthy eating message, including a range of activities for children, which was provided by The British Heart Foundation. Other sources include; books, toys and imaginative role-play. I allow the children to prepare fruit and we sometimes cook as an activity
I liaise with parents on their children’s preferences, medical intolerances, allergies, and dietary needs while taking into account of religion and ethnic origin where specific requirements have been outlined by parents. I provide alternatives for vegetarians. Please discuss any dietary requirements your child may have so I can provide the diet your child needs.
I aim to provide children with healthy, nutritious and varied diet with an appropriate balance of food types and vitamins both at main meals and at snack times. The children will be offered a wide variety of foods in a relaxed, social environment to try unfamiliar foods as well as their own favourites.
A strong emphasis is placed on serving fruit and vegetables throughout the day in a variety of forms. Fresh, dried, pureed or tinned to help children to achieve their five a day targets.
Water will be available throughout the whole day and the children will be encouraged to drink adequate amounts of water. I will also provide milk to drink at snack times and at mealtime’s fruit juice and high juice diluted with water.
I avoid fizzy drinks at all times and do not buy these into my home. I do not give sweets, crisps, cake and chocolate on a regular basis as these are only for a rare treat. These foods may be offered on special occasions like parties or birthdays.
